Cross My Mind Please, Look both ways before you cross my mind, Because I might be inclined to run the ‘Stop’ sign, And without any hesitation, I’ll take the violation because you are just fine. I’m wondering if our thoughts will intertwine, Because you have been jaywalking in and out of my lane, And I am that reckless driver that needs to be tamed. So how do I get you to the side of the road, And into my passenger seat; Since you seem to be having issues with crossing the street. Let me give you some direction as you’re making your way through my intersection, And making your way through every section Of my conscious — And I can promise, The ride is worth the while. Just make sure there’s enough gas in the tank; You going to need it for every mile. I know that you’re a pedestrian Trying to make it to your destination, But I can estimate that you’ll be there in plenty of time; You just be more careful when crossing my […]
Thriving Abroad as a Black Woman “To be culturally humble means I am willing to learn.” Joe Gallagher I only have limited experience traveling within the USA, but when it came to traveling abroad, I was completely scared out of my natural mind– traveling by myself as a woman did not frighten me, but as a Black woman I was nervous as a a cat on hot bricks! Family and friends told me “oh give it a few months, you’ll be back”, and admittedly there were moments of frustration and times of confusion, but overall these experiences living abroad has expanded my understanding of the human being, and myself. In 2019, I made a decision to move to Southeast Asia—a completely foreign region, different foods and a diverse set of customs and languages. Solo-traveling can be a bit intimidating, but here are a few lessons and tips you can learn from my experience as a Black woman. “Prepare for Every Stare; Weird Requests are apart of the Quest” If you are not from the region, and your skin color is darker than those around you, don’t be alarmed or feel odd; most likely natives are in awe—smile and simply greet […]
The Cruel Monster that hides within: Anxiety & Depression Imagine preparing for a meeting with your company’s top executives and your hands become clammy, heart pounding, and knees shaking as fierce as leaves in autumn. You might have a senior high school project that you have rehearsed the speech over a dozen times, and an hour before, you become physically ill with a fever, or stomach ache. Have you ever become consumed with your thoughts and completely cancel a presentation or fail to meet a required deadline? The idea of public speaking and fear of social performance/interactions alone makes your mind and body jolt. These metaphysical changes have been experienced by most people but often disregarded or ignored. I have canceled meetings, walked out in the middle of presentations and completely forgotten notes I’ve prepared for upcoming lessons. Anxiety and self-defeating thoughts cause issues in school and work performance, relationships and social interactions. Here are some steps to take to combat depression, anxiety and self-destructive habits: Meditation Meditation is the act of engaging in thought and reflection to receive deeper meaning and allows one to go within the core of your existence. Regardless of spiritual or religious beliefs and practices, […]

Here's what our readers have to say.
This book really stood out to me, the Author was very relatable , at times I could feel her anger but she always remained positive. I also love how the author included dates for each poem because it gives you a sense of how she was feeling on that specific date, I would definitely recommend this book to others especially those who’s been thru rough situations, depression etc I feel like it will touch a lot of people as it did for me.
S. Lawyer paints a vivid picture with her words. I especially love “Immigrant Mentality” and “The Body of this Essay”. She uses rhyme and imagery so well! Her handwriting on certain verses in the pages makes the book and the words genuine and unique. The only thing I would like her to add is the page numbers to poems, but overall, I am very impressed. This is the perfect gift for anyone who is a poetry lover.
This book is giving me so much life!!! The author pour out every experience like water to roots!!! The few pages that I read so far I really can relate to! A simple, good vibe type of read!!
Great read, really enjoyed it! Crowns might be my favorite poem yet. A lot of gold in that one! Looking forward to reading more from this author!
Uncover’d shares the vulnerabilities, challenges, obstacles, and pain of the author. She also shares her spirit, hope, determination, and triumphs. Every time I read a piece of the work, I get to a new level of understanding. Looking forward to Vol. 2.
